Most Households Pre-Rinse to Ensure Clean Results and Prevent Clogs

Pre-rinsing—ranging from a quick rinse to a full rinse-and-scrub—is the dominant habit and observed behavior. Motivations include ensuring a thorough clean, avoiding rewashing, and preventing clogs or odors. Only a minority load items as-is. Clear guidance should explain when rinsing is sufficient or unnecessary and address plumbing and filter concerns.

“I'll say it's a combination of all of those. The first thing is is that, you know, I have this drain at the bottom of my dishwasher. I don't want that to get clogged. I don't want that to, have big gulps of food that's stopping, that's gonna slow down the performance of my dishwasher and maybe cut back on the number of years or how long I can utilize it. The second thing is I don't want anything that I can just rinse off to to to to be an extra step for the dishwasher. I want when it shoots that hot water and that soap that it's gonna be on the big item that's still there that could get cleansed. So I I it is a little bit of habit, but for the most part, I don't wanna I wanna prevent clogs and let it focus entirely on the heat and the steam instead of just rinsing off the big stuff that could have already been rinsed off.”

“I'll be honest with you, it's just the way I do the dishes. I've learned from a plumber, my uncle was a plumber, so he always said when you do a dishwasher it's not like you're just doing a quick rinse and you've got a bunch of food on your plates because all of that goes into the pipes. And if you don't want to put in your sink, you don't want to put it down these pipes as well. So I always got into a habit of maybe over rinsing. I try to get as much of the food debris and stuff off and then I put it in there for that Soapy cleaning and sanitizing. So it's always usually lightly dirty. The plates will still have some sauce on it or a little little scraps of food, but for all the most the big stuff is all rinsed off.”

“Yes. I always pre rinse, and I always scrape. I always get the big clumps of food off and try to get as much of that food off as possible, just because I don't want so much food going into the pipes. Plus we moved into an older house. The pipes aren't the newest. So for me, I go extra care on all that because I wanna make sure I wanna keep the the, the house clean. So example, you're gonna see these these dishes kinda look clean already. They're not. There's definitely some. You can see the dirt and stuff on them. But for the most part, they look pretty clean.”

“I would say it's all three. Things are more likely to come out clean if you get rid of any large, you know, dirty parts of the item, so any kind of caked on food or anything like that. I also do not want the dishwasher to get clogged. It's a pain to fix that once it becomes clogged. And also, you know, it's just a good habit that we've developed over time.”

“So I was kind of taught growing up, my parents always made me do it as a kid, so it just kind of became habit, but it also just makes it to where you don't get a lot of food and particles and stuff stuck in your dishwasher that can kind of clog it. So I just like to make sure I try to keep them as clean as possible so there's not too much food or, you know, crumbs or stuff like that that might eventually clog up the dishwasher or make it smell or, you know, basically affect its performance over time.”

“Yes, I do like to pre-rinse. So for example, my plates, they're pretty, there's just a few little pieces of food on there, but I do try to get off as much as I can because you never know what is going to come totally clean or not, but usually they do come clean. But that is the reason I just like to pre-rinse so there's not a lot of stuff in my drain also at the bottom of the dishwasher.”

“For me it's the don't put food down the drain because I worry about plumbing because if anything goes on with the plumbing it's me that's either fixing it or me that's getting a contract to come fix it and paying for it. So for me I don't want to deal with the headache or the hassle so that's what I really harp on and that would be the biggest one where people are a little bit more lenient what I think is too much food people disagree with.”

“I would say as long as you're, you know, rinsing everything off as much as possible, that would be my only rule. Because, like I mentioned before, if you don't, sometimes, the stuff that's on the plates and the bowls, they can smell up the dishwasher really bad if they sit there too long and you don't run a load, or they can clog up your dishwasher and your filter and all that stuff. So as long as you're, you know, rinsing everything off, that's my number one rule and the one that I find most important.”

“Yeah. If it's, like, food on it, like, for example, this one right here has a little bit food, you wanna just rinse that out a little bit. Like, you don't want, like, half chunks of food on it. My mom, she literally just puts in her dishes without rinsing it at all. So she puts it in while it's dirty and stuff. For example, this one, I this was put in the dishwasher yesterday, and it never got cleaned properly because no one scraped the food off, and it was sitting on the side of the dishwasher over here. So I don't know if it didn't the water wasn't able to clean it properly on the sides of the dishwasher. Because we usually put, like, bigger utensils on the side that was sitting like here. It was stacked up with a bunch of utensils, and this didn't get cleaned. So I put it in again the next day. It still didn't get cleaned. So you're just gonna have to rinse it off and then put it in.”

“I make an effort to, you know, wash things off by hand before I put it in the dishwasher. I know I don't have to do that, but, you know, I would rather use a little bit extra water myself to make sure that the dishes are clean than to leave it all up to the dishwasher and the multiple runs of the dishwasher be required.”

“No. I only scrape because I don't want the the food particles to remain in the dishwasher and then stick to the next load. Okay? I don't know how the filtering system works. And earlier on, we've had this kind of an issue, maybe once or twice. So I don't know how large the particles are that can be that will go in the drain with the dishwasher and how the how long how many will stay. So that is bones and stuff, of course, big big pieces of debris, everybody removes. But the small debris also I remove because of that scare.”

“I think I pre rinse for both of those reasons. I do want my dishes to come out clean and I also don't want to have, food items building up within my dishwasher that would make it less efficient or make it smell unclean. So I'll typically rinse or scrape off dishes that have food stuck on them, but I do want to run it through the dishwasher to get it extra clean.”

“I'd probably say my biggest rule is to put the dishes in relatively clean. I don't want a lot of the gunk, grime, dirtiness on any of the dishes or Tupperware or bowls, any of that. I think that's more I just don't want my dishwasher to get clogged up. I don't want it to have I feel like if it hardens for too long, it's gonna be too hard to get off even being put in the dishwasher. So I would probably say that's the one that matters to me the most.”

“I do rinse off the plates, because it will jam it will jam the the pump that's at the bottom of the dishwasher down here. So if you don't take off the noodles or the rice, it'll it'll clog that pump that pushes the water out here. And then I'll have to use a a handy vac to suck it all out, which is a pain in the butt.”

“I rinse them because we did just get a new washer, and I felt like we were clogging up the filter with our old dishwasher, and I don't want to ruin our new dishwasher.”

“Definitely comes from habit. I also want to keep the filter and not have to empty it as every single load as well. So I think it's a dual reason.”

“Yes. I usually prescrape and rinse dishes before loading the dishwasher, because I wanna get get at least some of the hard stuff off the dishes so that oftentimes, the dishwasher smells. And if I don't rinse it beforehand, it'll smell even worse.”
